You may have noticed that I've built three kids in under three years. We are now 99.8% sure we are done. As far as I'm concerned, the only reason I'll get pregnant again is if my brother needs a surrogate. I'm ready to have full nights of sleep and I'm ready to fit into my favorite clothes.
So as of January 3rd, I am making a real effort to lose weight. I've lost weight before--60 pounds in 2003-2004--but back then I was exercising an hour or more per day. That's not a realistic option right now. However, I can get phone/e-mail coaching free through James's work, so I started that. I've been food journaling, eating more vegetables, doing extra sets of stairs at work, and trying to figure out when to get to the gym, even if it's only once per week. I got things off to a great start by getting the stomach flu in the first week. ;)
To get back to my 2004 weight, I need to lose 30 pounds, but I know it will be distributed mom-style at that point so I'll probably try for a little more after that. Nothing crazy, I just really want my clothes to fit. They suggested that I break it into smaller goals and think of ways to reward myself. Non-food ways, I think they meant. How can I reward myself? Through pedicures and fancy hair appointments. I'm almost as happy with a $20 pedi as a $75 one, but I really like getting expensive haircuts and organic highlights. So that's my 15-pounds-down reward, a trip to the fancy salon.
In the meantime, I haven't had highlights or even a trim since September. My bangs could use a trim, but it's fine otherwise. The color didn't get too horrible--I never vary too far off my natural shade, I just like to make things a little warmer and less mousy. But really, what I like about highlights is that the damage adds volume to my super-fine hair; and that effect had been dwindling. So I thought I'd tide myself over by damaging my hair with a nice $8 box of grocery-store hair dye. I figured I'd just leave it in for a little while so it wouldn't be too dramatic.
Ellen watched me do it this morning while everyone else slept. The effect is more noticeable than I'd hoped. James hasn't said anything, though, so either it's so awful that he's holding his tongue, or it's subtler than I think.
