I just asked someone on FB chat, "Where do you want to be in 10 years?"
Perhaps it was an intimidating question, because her reply was "one sec" and then she vanished. But it's only fair for me to answer it, myself. What will life be like in 10 years? Here's what I hope:
- Everyone I care about will be healthy and happy.
- We'll be planning a nice 15th-anniversary trip. Norway, perhaps. The kids can come along this time, but they'll have their own room.
- Our kids will (for sure, at 12, 12 and 10) be old enough to get their own breakfasts. That means we'll be going out more often and sleeping in afterward.
- Our kids will also be literate, compassionate human beings. I don't know if they'll be in the gifted school, but they'll certainly be eligible.
- We'll have taken the kids to Scotland with my parents and road-tripping to see friends (and baseball) around the country.
- I'll have a math/administrative job and be on my way to another set of letters after my name. I'd like to imagine I'll be a professor someplace, but this is meant to be a realistic fantasy.
- I'll be singing someplace challenging and working out regularly. James will have his own Thing too.
- We'll be 4 years from paying off our house (we're on-track for this now). We'll have tossed these gross beige carpets in favor of hardwoods.
- My brother will be married with children, living on his writing income (and his wife's work's health insurance). Our kids will see their younger cousins frequently.
If the universe treats you kindly, what will you be up to in 2021?
