Back in the summer of 2004, everybody in the Seattle Public Schools got fancy new phones. Come fall, we were all required to take a phone workshop and set up our voicemail. They made a new rule that we were all required to empty our mailboxes daily.

A week or so later, the little red light came on and the little screen said, "1 Message." I already knew what that message said, so I didn't bother looking up the voicemail phone number to track it down.

That little light has been on for almost three years, along with the screen urging: "1 Message."

Today I decided to change my outgoing message, in case the New Job people call me and hear my old name and position. In case they leave a message and I didn't notice.

Surprisingly, there were only about 15 messages. Less surprisingly, not hearing any of those messages has led to zero problems. They e-mail me, or they track me down in the hall. Whatever.

The little red light is off now. I'll let you know if the New Job people call.

And don't take it personally if it takes me a day or two to notice you've called.
